The Armor That Didn’t Fit

1 Samuel 17:38–39 describes how David put on Saul’s armor—helmet, coat of mail, and sword—and tried to walk. But he quickly realized it was too cumbersome. “I can’t go in these,” he told Saul. “I’m not used to them.” So he removed them .

This moment resonates deeply with our spiritual journey. Are we wearing armor that doesn’t fit? God calls each of us uniquely—not for pride or imitation, but to reveal His children’s potential.

Too often, we settle into roles or methods because they worked for someone else. David might have thought: “If it served her, it will serve me.” But sometimes God allows us to try on that oversized, ill-fitting armor so we discover: true victory comes only in the gear He designs for you. Saul’s armor may have been the finest in Israel, but it wasn’t tailored for a shepherd boy. David thrived instead with his sling and staff—tools he used faithfully in caring for sheep, now repurposed for victory

Ministry can be invigorating, but only if it aligns with your calling. We must ask: Am I working according to my gifts and God’s purposes—or merely mimicking someone else’s assignment?

As women, our passionate pursuit of connection and fellowship is beautiful and godly—but it must be anchored in clarity about our distinct mission in Christ. Some will serve as missionaries, others in the mission field. Both callings are noble, but they require different armor and strategies.

Looking at David’s background—shepherding under constant threat—he developed vigilance, courage, and trust in God’s provision. Those same habits shaped him into the man who would stand before Goliath. Our battles—against anxiety, depression, self-doubt—involve mental and spiritual strength. If we don’t put on the armor God provides, who will defend us?

Ephesians 6 reminds us: the armor God gives must be learned, practiced, and wielded daily. The enemy will whisper that you're unworthy, that you lack courage. If you believe that, he has won the battle to keep you sitting down. But remember: Goliath looked like a formidable adversary—but David knew where his strength came from. He prevailed, becoming an enduring example of God‑empowered faith .

So don’t strap on someone else’s armor. Pray that God will reveal the garments He has crafted uniquely for you. The same God who called David to slay Goliath has called you to victory—and He will equip you accordingly. Make sure your spiritual attire fits snugly. And fear not—God is with you.

1 Samuel 17:45 (NIV)j

“You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.”

Women of faith today must discern when and how to overcome the forces choking our world—whether in family, legacy, or broader spiritual influence. Our inheritance comes through the Bloodline of Christ; it’s a legacy we steward not by imitation, but by honoring the calling God has placed in each of us.
